The first of a two-part inaugural exhibition, A SENSE OF SPACE, explores the intersection of meaning and desire within the spaces we encounter, shape, destroy and preserve. This exhibition features a curated selection of artworks by eight international emerging artists whose works are connected through the contemplation of our surroundings.

PARTICIPATING ARTISTS

HANNAH ANTALEK → (b 1991 Albany, New York, lives and works Brooklyn, New York) is an artist whose work depicts pseudo-scientific landscapes where engorged flora have undergone unique evolutions in a post-human world, exploring the capacity for adaptation, survival and resilience across all life forms. Hannah received a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2013. Selected solo exhibitions include 5-50 Gallery, Queens, New York; Tinimini Room, Dordrecht, Netherlands; Marquee Projects, Bellport, New York; Lisa Boudet, Paris, France; and The Java Project, Brooklyn, New York. She was an artist in residence at The Moosey Residency, The Studios of Key West, and The Vermont Studio Center.

PRESTON DANIELS → (b 1983 The Plains, Virginia, lives and works in Los Angeles, California) is a sculptor and painter whose work merges atmospheric light and text with reference to surrealism and romanticism. His seemingly barren hallucinations of words, drapery and landscapes draw inspiration from the lush embellishments of the Hudson River School. Preston received a Masters of Fine Art from California State University Fullerton in 2010. He was an artist in residence at The Moosey Residency (2023). Selected solo exhibitions include Mark Moore Gallery, Los Angeles California and The Office, Miami, Florida. The current group exhibition, “A Sense of Space,” at ABRI MARS is his first showing in New York.

CHARLOTTE FLAMAND → (b 1991 Tours, France, lives and works in Brussels, Belgium) studied graphic arts before joining the painting department at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, where she graduated in 2017. Her work is driven by words; a daily journal of drawings, notes and images that she assembles into paint to create visual poetry. She has since participated in numerous exhibitions and residencies, and is the recipient of several awards such as the Horlait-Dapsens scholarship and the Moonens Prize. In 2022, she presented her first solo exhibition at the Rossicontemporary gallery in Brussels. The current group exhibition, “A Sense of Space,” at ABRI MARS is her first showing in the United States and New York.

KUNEL GAUR → (b 1980 New Delhi, India, lives and works in Toronto, Canada) melds the utilitarian rigor of 90s functionalism with a stripped-down, minimalist ethos to channel a nostalgic futurism—where clarity becomes cryptic, and irony is woven into the fabric of directness. The works distill complexity into stark simplicity. This layered interplay of form and content that teases the edges of meaning offers a grounding vision of what the future was once imagined with deconstructed bricolages made of plexiglass, steel, wood, and oil paint. Selected solo exhibitions include Gagné Contemporary, Toronto, Canada; Method, Mumbai, India; and AGENC Colab, New Delhi, India. The current group exhibition, “A Sense of Space,” at ABRI MARS is his first showing in New York.

THOMAS MAZZARELLA → (b 1983 Charleroi, Belgium, lives and works in Brussels, Belgium) paints tranquil, meditative moments where time inevitably flows by. It is in this movement that he invites the viewer to inhabit this time for themselves. Thomas graduated from the Fine Arts Academy of Liège in 2008. He has presented several solo exhibitions at Rossicontemporary Gallery in Brussels and is part of the permanent Collection Province de Hainaut in Belgium. The current group exhibition, “A Sense of Space,” at ABRI MARS is his first showing in the United States and New York.

MARIE ROSEN → (b 1984 Brussels, Belgium, where she currently lives and works) is a painter who explores the afterlife in her haunting minimalist expressions that invite abnegation and modesty to connect with its tranquil, yet unshakable confidence. Her works are included in several private and public collections including the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Belgium in Brussels and the Musée de Beaux-Arts in Charleroi. The current group exhibition, “A Sense of Space,” at ABRI MARS is her first showing in the United States and New York.

BORIS SACCONE → (b 1991 Schongau, Germany, lives and works in Munich, Germany) creates enthralling paintings with faux-naïf narrative scenes that blur the line between reality and transcendence. His works experiment with flat, stylized surfaces, abstraction and planar constructions combined with the tension of cool pastel tones and bold outlines that draw the viewer to contemplate the enigmatic motifs and the atmospheric spaces. Boris graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts Munich in 2023, where he studied Fine Arts as “Meisterschüler” in the class of Professor Gregor Hildebrandt. He has presented several solo exhibitions at Jo van De Loo in Munich. The current group exhibition, “A Sense of Space,” at ABRI MARS is his first showing in New York.

QIN TAN → (b 1993 Beijing, China, lives and works in Cliffside Park, New Jersey) observes what it means to be human in the present day. The subjects of her paintings range from surreal landscapes to symbolic stick figures that occasionally morph into different objects and tools that reflect life in its most pure and primordial form within an artificial reality—a conscious observer that is looking for answers and meaning among rich landscapes inspired by our digital world. She graduated from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2015. Selected solo exhibitions include 42 Art Project, Beijing, China and JPS Gallery, Hong Kong.
